Nissan Canton Employees Work with Habitat for Humanity to Build New Home for Family
- This marks the 10th home built by employees of the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant
- Nissan’s national partnership with Habitat for Humanity began in 2005
CANTON, Miss. – Every year for more than a decade, the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant has joined forces with Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area (HFHMCA) to build affordable, sustainable homes in the local community. This year, Nissan employees are focusing their efforts on building a home for a local family in the Richard Circle neighborhood of Canton.
Hundreds of employee volunteers from Nissan are taking part in an eight-day build from February through April for Mildred Daughtery and her son.
“Nissan is very proud and fortunate to call Canton our home for the last 14 years,” said Steve Marsh, vice president of Manufacturing, Nissan Canton. “We are honored to again have this opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area and to work alongside the Daughtery family so that they can call Canton home, too.”
Nissan’s national partnership with Habitat began in 2005, in response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Nissan donated $1 million, provided 50 Nissan Titan trucks to assist Habitat’s response efforts in the Gulf Coast and mobilized employees to assist in home building. Since 2006, Nissan employees have helped to build more than 60 homes across the United States, logging more than 70,000 volunteer hours.
“Nissan Canton’s sponsorship this year of a house in Canton is the latest in a long and generous history of their partnership with us,” said Merrill McKewen, executive director, HFHMCA. “Nissan employees demonstrate the highest ideals of volunteerism, putting their hearts into action as they work alongside partner families, helping them build their new homes. We are proud to be their partner.”
Daughtery is looking forward to working with Nissan employee volunteers on her house.
“I can’t wait to get to know the Nissan volunteers and work with them,” she said. “This is a wonderful blessing that Nissan and Habitat for Humanity are doing for my family. My late husband and I had dreamed of owning a home. I know he is looking down from heaven, smiling, and he is grateful to everyone who is helping me and my son.”
